About The Campaign

Our broken food system is hurting America.
America’s food system has become dangerously over-consolidated. In just the past 30 years, the number of companies that control how our food is grown, processed and sold has withered to a mere handful.
This extreme market concentration has allowed these corporations to reap massive profits, while American citizens are paying a huge cost and family farmers are being driven off the land. Rather than operating in a truly competitive market, agribusiness has rigged the system so family farmers receive fewer profits each year, our nation’s environment has become polluted and our health jeopardized by a steady stream of highly processed, “cheap” food.
The statistics are truly staggering:
- Just four companies control more than: 84% of our nation’s beef, 66% of our pork, and 58% of our chicken
- While only one company -- Monsanto -- controls the genetics of 93% of the soybean and 80% of the corn grown in the U.S.
- And Dean Foods controls 40% of our fluid milk.
As Big Food conglomerates use their market power to squeeze profits from hard working family farmers and farm workers, they also use their wealth and power to influence Congress and state legislators to corrupt the basic laws and regulations of our democracy to their benefit. Each year giant agribusiness corporations receive billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, helping them gain an unfair advantage in the market over smaller companies and allowing them to reap huge profits at the expense of the family farmer and American consumer. It’s Time for Change.
This year we have an unprecedented opportunity to fight back against Big Food and put an end to the corporate control of our food system. For the first time in our nation’s history the Department of Justice (DOJ) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are holding a series of joint workshops around the country to investigate anti-competitive practices in the food and agricultural sectors. Already, the DOJ has held 2 workshops, one in Ankeny, IA on seed concentration, the second in Normal, AL on the poultry industry and another in Madison, WI to address concentration in the dairy industry. It’s vital for the survival of our nation’s dairy farmers, which has been suffering under the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. To rebuild a healthy, fair and nutritious food system, keep the promise of opportunity alive for America’s farmers, and renew our faith in America’s justice system, our nation’s antitrust laws must be vigorously enforced without bias in the food industry.
FightBigFood.org is rallying hundreds of thousands of Americans to urge the Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Agriculture to thoroughly examine the control of our food system and take immediate action to address unfair practices. Join us. We’ll need your voice to turn the tide against Big Food’s army of lobbyists on Capitol Hill.
